What is renewable energy?

Renewable energy technologies are just that: renewable. They are naturally and continually replenished and in abundant supply. Coming from the sun, wind, water, plants and underground geothermal activity, renewable energy is clean, pure and endless. It is the environmentally preferable alternative to conventional energy from sources such as fossil fuels that are not renewable. Electricity production using renewable energy sources has little or no environmental impact, unlike electricity from fossil fuel combustion, which causes release of heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In addition to environmental benefits, homegrown renewable energy can also increase US energy security and create local jobs.
